Cluj-Napoca City Hall will begin construction of a new Garibaldi bridge over the Someșul Mic river, replacing a structure more than 60 years old. The first stage requires a full closure of the bridge to car traffic from Monday, 14 September 2026, while a temporary bridge keeps the Grigorescu district connected to the rest of the city. The works change traffic and bus routes in the area.

What changes for traffic

From 14 September 2026 the following restrictions apply:

  • the Garibaldi bridge is closed to cars;
  • on Giuseppe Garibaldi street, between B-dul 1 Decembrie 1918 and Gavril Muzicescu street, only local residents have access;
  • on Splaiul Independenței, lane 1, which serves the right turn onto the bridge, is restricted;
  • Gavril Muzicescu street becomes a dead end towards Giuseppe Garibaldi street, with residents’ access from Sigismund Toduță street.

Traffic from Grigorescu to the centre is diverted via B-dul 1 Decembrie 1918, the temporary bridge and Splaiul Independenței. Traffic towards Grigorescu can use the Napoca bridge or the temporary bridge. The contractor will mark the restrictions with signs and road markings.

Bus routes

Lines 30 and 54N and the school line E12 are diverted through Octavian Goga street and the Napoca bridge. Towards the centre, the Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cluj Arena stops are temporarily suspended; towards Grigorescu, the Splaiul Independenței stop is suspended. Buses on lines 26, 26L, 27, 28, 28B, 41 and 44 will make additional stops at Piața 14 Iulie Sud and Hotel Sport towards the centre. Towards Grigorescu, the same lines will stop additionally at Octavian Goga and Piața 14 Iulie.

Why the city is rebuilding the bridge

The city hall notes that since the old bridge was built the city has grown, traffic has changed and mobility needs are different. The new bridge will have four traffic lanes, spaces for pedestrians, cycle tracks and infrastructure adapted to today’s city. The first stage of works covers new routes for the utility networks that cross the bridge. The temporary bridge was opened to traffic on 12 August 2026. Its role is also to reduce, as far as possible, the impact on people who travel through the area every day.
