Barcelona City Council, through the Municipal Markets Institute of Barcelona (IMMB), awarded the contract in October to draft the projects and manage the works for the renovation of the Felip II market in the Sant Andreu district. The contract went to Taller Sau SLP for more than 159,000 euros. It prepares a renovation that is expected to start at the end of 2027, with a total estimated cost of about 3 million euros.

What the contract covers

The award includes the preliminary project, the basic project, the executive project, works management and assistance when the market starts operating after the works. Among the technical proposals received, the city gave particular weight to architectural and urban quality, energy efficiency and the life cycle of materials, and constructive coherence together with the cost of works and maintenance.

What the renovation will change

The renovation of the Felip II market has four main objectives:

  • Improve access to the market and make the building more transparent by remodelling its envelope.
  • Improve the outdoor space around the market, with a proposal to remove the volume used for waste management.
  • Create new entrances to the market building and inside it to improve vertical circulation.
  • Relocate the common areas (offices, multipurpose rooms, services, toilets) and the logistics area.

Timeline and wider plan

The project is part of the Strategic Markets Plan, presented this year within Barcelona’s role as European Capital of Commerce, and of the IMMB’s market remodelling plan. The current forecast is to have the projects ready before summer 2027 and to start works at the end of 2027. The final cost of the market’s remodelling is estimated at around 3 million euros.
