Amsterdam’s research and statistics office (O&S) has published its report Toerisme MRA 2025-2026 on the visitor economy of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region (MRA). Overnight stays in private homes and rooms booked through online platforms fell 4% in 2025 to just over one million, which is 59% below 2019. Hotels and hostels, by contrast, recorded 22.2 million overnight stays, so growth in overnight tourism is being carried by hotel capacity.
Visitors and nights in 2025
An estimated 12.9 million unique day visitors and 10.1 million overnight visitors came to Amsterdam in 2025, slightly more than in 2024. Overnight visitors stayed an average of 2.39 nights, giving 24.0 million overnight stays in total. Day visitors made 21.9 million day visits. The number of day visits has not yet recovered from the coronavirus period. There are, however, more overnight stays than in 2019, partly because the average length of stay has increased.
| Accommodation | Nights in 2025 | Change vs 2024 | Change vs 2019 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotels and hostels | 22.2 million | +4% | +21% |
| Private homes and rooms via online platforms | just over 1 million | -4% | -59% |
Amsterdam in the national picture
Amsterdam is the city in the Netherlands most visited by foreign tourists, accounting for more than half (52%) of foreign hotel overnight stays in the country. Foreign hotel guests also stay longer on average in Amsterdam than elsewhere in the Netherlands. Hotel overnight stays are rising outside the city too: by 5% in the MRA and 2% nationally in 2025. In 2024, Amsterdam had 76,629 jobs in the tourism sector, 10% of all jobs in the city.
2026 and beyond
Provisional figures show that national hotel overnight stays fell between January and July 2026, while Amsterdam recorded growth of 3%. Intercontinental tourism rose relatively strongly in 2025 but fell in the first months of 2026. The office places this within a global trend in which geopolitical unrest and rising travel costs lead people to holiday closer to home. A separate O&S visitor forecast expects tourist overnight stays to keep rising, to between 25.0 and 29.4 million in 2028, while day visits remain below pre-coronavirus levels for now. Another study found that in 2025 tourist carrying capacity was under pressure in six neighbourhoods, one more than in 2023. The new report also maps the supply of different types of accommodation and business developments in the tourism sector.
