Solna has put the first detailed plan for the northern part of Hagastaden out for public review. The plan covers part of the Solna hospital area and would turn a closed institutional area into a mixed district of homes, workplaces and meeting places. Hagastaden is growing on both sides of the boundary between Solna and Stockholm and is expected in time to hold about 7,000 homes, around 3,000 of them in Solna, and up to 50,000 workplaces.
What the plan contains
The plan, DP1 in Norra Hagastaden, covers part of the Haga 4:17 property and others, and provides for about 1,200 new homes. Alongside homes, it includes business premises and premises for care, research, laboratories and education. The district is planned around walking, cycling and public transport, with green streets, squares and parks. The hospital park, Sjukhusparken, is to become a district park with a multi-sport area for informal sport, and several new green spaces will be added along the so-called Academic route (Akademiska stråket). Important historic buildings will be kept and given new uses. The plan includes, for example, a preschool with about 140 places in the Eugeniahemmet building.
Why the area is changing
Some activities in the area have already moved and others will, among other places to the neighbouring Karolinska University Hospital Solna site west of the plan area. According to the city, the change will make Norra Hagastaden an integrated part of the inner city and strengthen the link to the National City Park to the east. The metro’s green line is being extended from Odenplan via Hagastaden to Arenastaden. Martin Eliasson, chair of Solna’s building committee, said: “Hagastaden is a clear example of how we build away borders.” Because carrying out the plan was judged to involve a risk of significant environmental impact, an environmental impact assessment has been prepared.
