Rome’s Capitoline Assembly has approved a resolution recognising the significant public and strategic interest of the Tre Fontane estate, an area of about 14 hectares in the south of the city. The vote authorises city offices to take part in the competitive procedure for the possible acquisition of the site. The city wants to keep one of the last green areas of the southern sector whole and turn it into public green space.

What was decided

The estate lies between via Laurentina and via Cristoforo Colombo. With the resolution, Roma Capitale formally starts its participation in the competitive auction for full ownership of the property. The sale procedure originated within a composition with creditors (concordato preventivo).

The auction and the deadline

  • 6 October: the area was provisionally awarded at auction for 2.48 million euros.
  • After a request from the mayor, the court-appointed liquidator extended the deadline for improved offers.
  • 26 October 2026: the new deadline for improved offers, which allows Roma Capitale to take part.

Why the city wants the land

The administration aims to avoid the fragmentation of the estate and to give it a use consistent with the collective interest, with equipped public green space and areas open to residents. According to planning councillor Maurizio Veloccia, an earlier planning procedure had allowed the land to be transformed with buildings, subject to a later programme agreement after the approval of the 2022 PTPR, the regional landscape plan. That plan then added very strict planning constraints that sharply limit any transformation. Veloccia said the site lies on the last stretch of via Colombo where some green areas are still available and is an opportunity to extend and connect the existing Tre Fontane Park. He described it as a strategic place for environmental projects, urban parks and equipped green spaces.

What happens next

The stated goal is to acquire the area and enhance it from a naturalistic and ecological point of view, serving the EUR and Montagnola districts. The city’s page also links to an earlier item reporting that the city government (Giunta) approved participation in the acquisition.
