The City of Marseille has opened a 2026 call for projects to reduce gender inequality in sport. Organisations can apply between 18 June and 27 July 2026. The scheme follows a 2025 round in which the City supported 18 projects, and it targets sports spaces that are mostly used by men.

What the call aims to do

The municipality wants to take over spaces mainly occupied by men and make them accessible to women. It also wants to develop mixed participation in sports activities and competitions. A further aim is to increase media coverage and recognition of women’s sport and of gender minorities. The new projects should help to:

  • strengthen gender equality in sport from an early age;
  • promote sport among women in Marseille;
  • improve access for women who are furthest from sport;
  • combat gender stereotypes and sexist and sexual violence.

Why the City is acting

The City describes sport as a key lever for emancipation, social cohesion and public health, while noting that inequalities between women and men remain strong. It points to representation in sports federations: out of 91 delegated federations, women are the majority in only 10, and around forty have fewer than 20% female licences. According to the City, girls stop playing sport earlier than boys because of persistent stereotypes, a lack of role models and sometimes poorly adapted facilities. The City says these findings show the need for lasting, fair and safe access to sport.

The 2025 round and how to apply

The 18 projects supported in 2025 covered sports including football, basketball, breakdance, judo ju-jitsu, climbing, American football, skateboarding and weightlifting. They made it possible to practise sport in a safe environment away from gender stereotypes. Participants were supported in building self-confidence through sports sessions and fun, informative workshops.

Organisations wishing to apply for the 2026 call must submit their file, depending on their status, through the City’s online grants platform or by email to the sports grants service. Submissions are accepted from 18 June to 27 July 2026.
