Malmö’s city council decided on 24 September that the City of Malmö will acquire the Jungmannen 1 property in Västra Hamnen. The property is to be developed into a skills centre for electricity and energy, where courses for young people and adults are gathered and designed in close cooperation with the energy sector. The city says the project should help meet the growing need for skills in electrification and strengthen Malmö’s role in the green transition.

Who the centre is for

The skills centre is planned to host:

  • upper secondary education
  • municipal adult education
  • higher vocational education (yrkeshögskola)
  • skills development for people already in work

With the purchase of Jungmannen 1, the city aims to bring education and industry together in a shared environment.

Why Malmö is doing it

The city describes Skåne as being in an extensive electrification phase. The expansion of electricity grids, the transition of industry and a more electrified society are increasing the need for trained workers. At the same time, access to training is limited in several of the occupations in demand.

Anneli Schwartz, director of the Upper Secondary and Adult Education Administration, said electrification is decisive for the climate transition and the region’s competitiveness. According to her, the centre will let the city take greater responsibility for long-term skills supply, with the municipality, education providers and business working on the issue together.

Background

The decision follows a proposal announced in June, which named Jungmannen 1 on Skeppsgatan in Västra Hamnen as the place where training for upper secondary pupils, adult learners and higher vocational students would be gathered. Separately, the 2026 budget of the Upper Secondary and Adult Education Committee was strengthened by a total of more than 125 million kronor. That increase includes extra investment in more vocational programmes for shortage occupations.
