Madrid’s Governing Board on 5 November 2026 authorised 1,755,000 euros in grants for theatres and cinemas in the city. The money is split between performing arts venues and cinemas and will fund activities carried out during 2027. The city presents the scheme as support for the development of the performing arts and film in the capital.
What was approved
The Governing Board authorised the spending that will finance the grants. The aid is managed by the Culture, Tourism and Sport department and is awarded through competitive bidding. It is open to both performing arts venues and cinemas.
The money
The total budget is divided into two strands:
| Strand | Amount |
|---|---|
| Performing arts venues | 1,210,950 euros |
| Cinemas | 544,050 euros |
| Total | 1,755,000 euros |
Why the city is doing it
According to the city, the grant line aims to boost the competitiveness of the audiovisual industry and to support the development of professionals and talent in the sector. It is also meant to support Madrid’s cultural fabric. For venues, the scheme is a recurring funding line: it has run in previous years and is now set for 2027.
Timeline and earlier rounds
The supported activities must take place between 1 January and 31 December 2027. The call for applications will be published at the start of 2027, and organisations will be able to apply from then on. In 2025 the grants had more than thirty beneficiaries among Madrid’s theatres and cinemas. That number rose in 2026, which the city describes as a positive trend in the sector’s interest in the grants.
The grants form a small part of the city’s wider spending. Madrid has announced a municipal budget of 6,901 million euros for 2027, 4.9% more than this year.
