The municipality of Leeuwarden presented its new coalition agreement, titled ‘Ruimte voor de toekomst’ (Room for the future), on 10 June 2026. The group leaders of PRO, D66, VVD and CDA introduced the proposed aldermen, who explained their portfolios and ambitions for the 2026–2030 term. The agreement sets the political priorities for housing and neighbourhood policy in the capital of Fryslân.
What the agreement prioritises
The municipality describes Leeuwarden as growing and developing further as the capital of Fryslân and an important player in the region. With the agreement, it chooses a decisive approach focused on liveable neighbourhoods and villages, affordable homes and equal opportunities for residents. The coalition’s message is to press on now: Leeuwarden wants to carry out existing plans, working together with residents, entrepreneurs and civil society partners. The stated aim is a municipality where it is pleasant to live, work and spend one’s life. The agreement can be read in full, and a Frisian version is also available.
Who is responsible for what
The outline division of portfolios is as follows:
- Mayor Sybrand Buma: public order, safety, fire service and police, and communication
- Alderman Hein Kuiken: social domain, income security and finance
- Alderman Julie Bruijnincx: building, housing and management
- Alderman Marcel Visser: work, culture and services
- Alderman Evert Stellingwerf: spatial planning, area development, sustainability and mobility
- Alderman Abel Reitsma: education, economy and health
For urban development, two portfolios are central. Bruijnincx is responsible for building, housing and management, while Stellingwerf covers spatial planning, area development, sustainability and mobility.
