The City of Lahti has announced that a new data centre is being planned for the Kujala industrial area. The project is being developed by ecogrid.energy Oy and the construction company Peab, and follows the 1.2-billion-euro data centre being built in Kiveriö. The city sees such investments as a way to bring jobs, tax revenue and other businesses to Lahti.
What is planned
The Finnish company ecogrid.energy Oy is responsible for the design of the data centre. An application for a building permit and a waiver has been submitted to the city. The data centre would be built on the east side of Karistonkatu, at Vartiokallionkatu 2, on a Peab-owned lot that was formerly an asphalt plant and where Peab currently operates a gravel quarry.
According to the city, there are no residential areas in the immediate vicinity of the site. The nearest building is more than 300 metres away.
Timetable and jobs
- Construction can begin as soon as the necessary permits are obtained.
- Start of construction: first half of 2027.
- Expected completion: 2028.
- Employment during construction: more than 3,000 person-years (Peab estimate).
Why Lahti wants data centres
The city says it wants companies of all sizes to set up operations in Lahti. In its view, the larger the company, the more jobs, tax revenue, vitality, residents and other businesses it brings, and the impact of a data centre on the city’s vitality is long-term. The city also notes that Finland is an attractive location for data centres because of its cool climate, clean energy and stable conditions. Mayor Niko Kyynäräinen said it is great that such significant investments are being planned for Lahti.
Background: the Kiveriö project
In August 2025 the city reported that the company DayOne is building a 1.2-billion-euro data centre in Kiveriö, Lahti. It is located on a ten-hectare site along Ilmarisentie and Väinämöisentie and is due to begin operations in 2027. The aim is to employ about 100 people permanently as that project progresses. The city and DayOne are also preparing a partnership growth agreement, and DayOne is donating a total of 2.5 million euros to the LUT universities.
