Copenhagen’s Climate, Environment and Technical Committee has approved six new city-life streets in Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Østerbro and Christianshavn. The streets are meant to bring more greenery, more calm and better space for street life, based on proposals from local residents. Work on the six streets is expected to begin in spring 2027.

What was approved

The six streets are Dronningensgade in Christianshavn, Frejasgade and Heimdalsgade in Nørrebro, Teglværksgade in Østerbro, and Tullinsgade and Valdemarsgade in Vesterbro. They were selected in the scheme’s third round of ideas and approved at the committee’s meeting on Monday evening. The round drew 33 project ideas, and the city-life funds have received 167 applications in total.

How the scheme works

A city-life street is a local street with measures that increase opportunities for socialising, spending time and activity. This is typically done alongside traffic-calming measures and more planting that make the street more inviting. The city-life street fund supports Copenhageners who want more places to stay and greener streets with calmer traffic. Its projects are usually smaller than the municipality’s other construction projects, so some solutions may be temporary, for example planter boxes where the road cannot be dug up.

Climate, environment and technical mayor Line Barfod said the streets show that Copenhageners can make a direct and noticeable mark on their area in cooperation with the municipality. City council member Astrid Aller of SF said the many applications underline that the city needs more green streets.

Earlier city-life streets

The new streets follow an earlier group of city-life streets. Ægirsgade and the junction of Thorsgade and Ydunsgade in Nørrebro are among those already completed, as is Fridtjof Nansens Plads in Indre By. Several others are expected to be completed as follows:

  • End of 2026: Kastelsvej (Indre By) and Provstevej (Bispebjerg)
  • Spring 2027: Cumberlandsgade (Amager Øst)
  • Summer 2027: Rentemestervej (Bispebjerg), Lodivej (Amager Øst), Gormsgade and Ravnsborggade (Nørrebro)
